What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Procedures mentioned: Questionnaires

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "All participants will complete psychosocial survey measures at baseline, six weeks, and 3 months."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests two versions of a mind-body program called Recovering Together after Cardiac Arrest. It is for people who survived cardiac arrest, when the heart stops pumping blood, and their caregivers. The results will help improve the programs.

The purpose of this study is to pilot two resilience interventions for cardiac arrest survivors and their informal caregivers, Recovering Together after Cardiac Arrest 1 and Recovering Together after Cardiac Arrest 2 . The data the investigators gather in this study will be used to further refine the interventions.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • The survivor had a cardiac arrest in or outside a hospital, with a new diagnosis and loss of pulse recorded during that hospital stay.
  • The survivor names a caregiver who is their main source of emotional support and help with daily tasks.
  • The survivor scores above 5 on a short memory and thinking test to show they can take part.
  • Both can and are willing to join sessions in person and by live video.
  • Both speak English and are age 18 or older.
  • At least one person has significant anxiety or depression symptoms, with a score above 7 on either part of the study’s screening test.

Who can't join

  • Either person has active psychosis (trouble knowing what is real), mania (very high mood or energy), drug or alcohol dependence, or an intent or plan to end their life that needs a higher level of care.
  • Either person has another mental health, brain, or nerve condition that keeps them from taking part meaningfully.
  • The caregiver has also survived cardiac arrest.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Out-of-hospital or in-hospital CA survivor (must have new diagnosis of "cardiac arrest" in electronic medical record from index hospitalization with documented loss of pulse) with an identified caregiver (identified by the survivor who is their primary source of emotional and functional support) * survivor must score \>5 on Short Form of the Mini Mental State Exam for sufficient cognitive function for meaningful participation * ability and willingness to participate in a hybrid in-person/live video intervention * English speaking adults (18 year or older) * at least one member of the dyad endorses clinically significant emotional distress during screening (\>7 on either of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale subscales). Exclusion Criteria: * active psychosis, mania, substance dependence, or suicidal intent or plan that would require a higher level of care * any other psychiatric or neurological condition that would preclude meaningful participation * the caregiver must not be a cardiac arrest survivor
