What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study tests how netarsudil (Rhopressa) eye drops affect the tissue that drains fluid from the eye. It is for adults with high eye pressure or open-angle glaucoma, a disease that damages the eye's nerve. Participants are assigned by chance to netarsudil or artificial tears, with detailed eye images taken before treatment and about 14 days later.
This study evaluates the effects of netarsudil (Rhopressa) on the trabecular meshwork in subjects with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. Participants will be randomized to receive either netarsudil or placebo (artificial tears). High-resolution imaging using adaptive optics gonioscopy, anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), and OCT gonioscopy will be performed at baseline and after approximately 14 days of treatment. The primary objective is to assess changes in trabecular meshwork lamellae spacing, with secondary measures including trabecular meshwork height, width, and Schlemm's canal diameter.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Age 18 or older.
- Have high eye pressure or open-angle glaucoma.
- Have had an eye exam within the past year.
- If you have glaucoma, eye scans and side-vision tests must show signs of the disease.
- Vision of 20/100 or better with your best glasses or contact lenses.
- Have an open drainage angle in the eye, confirmed by an eye exam and scan.
- Eye pressure between 18 and 34 mmHg before treatment or after a required break from eye-pressure medicine, if needed.
Who can't join
- Known problems tolerating netarsudil eye drops.
- Scarring or active disease of the cornea, the clear front of the eye, that would affect imaging.
- Unable to tolerate gonioscopy, an exam of the eye's drainage angle.
- Women who could become pregnant and are not using effective birth control or have not had a procedure that prevents pregnancy.
- Any condition the study doctor believes would increase your risk or keep you from finishing the study.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Adults aged 18 years or older * Diagnosis of ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma * Eye examination within the past year * For glaucoma subjects: structural (optic nerve and/or retinal nerve fiber layer) and functional (visual field) findings consistent with glaucoma * Best-corrected visual acuity of 20/100 or better * Open anterior chamber angle as confirmed by gonioscopy and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) * Intraocular pressure between 18 and 34 mmHg (treatment-naïve or after washout, if applicable) Exclusion Criteria: * Known intolerance to netarsudil ophthalmic solution * Corneal scarring or active corneal disease that would interfere with imaging * Inability to tolerate gonioscopy procedures * Females of childbearing potential who are not using effective contraception or are not sterile * Any condition that, in the opinion of the investigator, would place the subject at increased risk or interfere with study completion
