What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests whether Hypershell X, a powered device that helps lift the hip, improves short-distance walking right away. It is for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) who have weak hip muscles. The device is sold commercially and is not regulated by the FDA.

The purpose of this study is to assess the immediate effects of a commercially available non-FDA regulated powered hip flexion assist device (Hypershell X, Shenzhen, China) on walking ability in persons with MS. The main question it aims to answer is: Does a powered hip flexion device provide immediate improvements in walking ability over short distances for people with MS?

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Be 18 to 80 years old.
  • Have relapsing-remitting, primary progressive, or secondary progressive MS.
  • Have weakness when lifting one or both hips, with a muscle strength test score of 3 or less.
  • Be able to walk at least 30 meters without resting or getting physical help from another person.
  • Have a waist size of 26 to 48 inches, be 5 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, and weigh 100 to 230 pounds.

Who can't join

  • Regular use of a hip-lifting brace or support device in the past 6 months.
  • Problems with thinking or communication that could make taking part unsafe.
  • Major pain or changes in the shape of the legs that could affect walking.
  • Severe muscle stiffness in the hips or legs that could affect walking, with a Modified Ashworth test score of 3 or 4.
  • Another brain or nerve condition that could affect walking.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Age 18-80 * Diagnosis of relapsing remitting, primary progressive or secondary progressive MS * Unilateral or bilateral hip flexion weakness (Manual muscle testing score of 3 or less) * Ability to walk at least 30 meters without requiring rest and without physical support or assistance from another person. * Waist circumference 26-48", Height 5 '- 6'2", Weight 100-230lbs Exclusion Criteria: * Prior regular use of a hip flexion orthosis within the past 6 months. * Cognitive or communication deficits that would limit ability to participate safely. * Significant pain or deformity of the lower extremities that could impact walking ability. * Severe spasticity (Modified Ashworth Score of 3 or 4) of the hips or lower extremities that could impact walking ability. * Any other neurological conditions that may affect gait.
