What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study looks at how brain signals relate to trouble walking and keeping balance in Parkinson's disease. It also tests how different deep brain stimulation (DBS) settings may affect these problems. It is for people with Parkinson's who have a Medtronic Percept DBS device and whose feet sometimes feel stuck when they try to walk.
The purpose of this study is to learn how brain signals are related to freezing of gait (FOG) and balance problems in Parkinson's disease (PD) and to study how different deep brain stimulation (DBS) settings may affect these symptoms.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- You have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
- You already have a Medtronic Percept DBS device, which sends electrical signals to the brain, as part of your medical care.
- Your DBS settings have stayed the same for at least 3 months.
- You have freezing of gait: you suddenly cannot move your feet when trying to walk.
- You can walk on your own for at least 10 minutes without help.
- You are willing to stop your Parkinson's medicines for a short time and have your DBS settings changed for study tests.
- You can understand the study and agree to take part.
Who can't join
- You have a brain or nerve condition other than Parkinson's, such as a stroke or multiple sclerosis.
- You have dementia, a condition that affects memory and thinking, or trouble understanding the study or agreeing to take part.
- You currently have problems with alcohol or drug abuse.
- You have hearing or vision problems that would make using a virtual reality headset difficult.
- The study doctor thinks a medical or mental health condition would make taking part unsafe or difficult for you.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * You have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease * You already have a deep brain stimulation (DBS) device implanted as part of your medical care - specifically, the Medtronic Percept DBS device * Your DBS settings have been stable for at least 3 months * You experience freezing of gait (sudden inability to move your feet when trying to walk) * You are able to walk on your own for at least 10 minutes without assistance * You are willing to temporarily stop your Parkinson's medications and have your DBS settings adjusted for study testing * You are able to understand the study and provide consent to participate Exclusion Criteria: * You have a neurological condition other than Parkinson's disease (such as stroke or multiple sclerosis) * You have been diagnosed with dementia or have difficulty understanding the study or giving consent * You currently have alcohol or substance abuse problems * You have hearing or vision problems that would make it difficult to use a virtual reality headset * You have any medical or mental health condition that, in the opinion of the study doctor, would make it unsafe or difficult for you to participate
