What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests whether removing a ripcord from a glaucoma drainage device more than 3 months after placement changes pressure inside the eye. It is for adults with glaucoma who receive care at Duke Eye Center Glaucoma Clinic. Eye pressure will be checked before and after removal and at follow-up visits.

This is a research study to find out if removing the ripcord from a glaucoma drainage device more than 3 months after it has been placed has any effect on intraocular pressure. Participation in research studies is voluntary. The ripcord will be removed at a routine glaucoma care visit and intraocular pressure will be measured before removal, 30 minutes following, and at 1 week, 6 weeks and 3-month intervals during regular clinic visits.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You are older than 18.
  • You had an Ahmed Clear Path or Baervelt drainage device with a ripcord placed more than 3 months ago.
  • You have glaucoma, an eye disease, and are receiving care at Duke Eye Center Glaucoma Clinic.
  • The ripcord stitch is still in place and can be reached for removal.
  • You can give written consent to join the study.
  • Your eye pressure is above 10 mm Hg, a unit used to measure pressure.

Who can't join

  • You have an active infection or conjunctivitis (pink eye) in either eye.
  • You cannot have the ripcord removed.
  • You are scheduled for more glaucoma surgery.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
