What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Procedures mentioned: Biopsies

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "The participants will undergo sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in addition to full axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) during the planned breast cancer surgery."
  • "But advances in therapy have called into question if mastectomy with ALND is still necessary in participants with IBC, with some physicians advocating for the option of sentinel lymph node biopsy."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests whether doctors can take samples from the first underarm lymph nodes that breast cancer may spread to. It is for adults with inflammatory breast cancer who have finished chemotherapy before surgery. During planned breast surgery, participants will get an injection to help find these nodes, have them sampled, and then have the full underarm lymph node removal.

This study is for participants with inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). The purpose of this study is to find out whether it is possible to take a sample of underarm lymph nodes for participants with IBC. The participants will undergo sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in addition to full axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) during the planned breast cancer surgery. Participants enrolled in the study will first be injected with tracer, then undergo SLNB, and then undergo full ALND.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Older than 18 years.
  • Have inflammatory breast cancer.
  • Have finished the planned course of chemotherapy given before surgery.
  • Have surgery at Cleveland Clinic.

Who can't join

  • Pregnant at the time of surgery. The blue dye used to find lymph nodes may harm the unborn baby.
  • Have cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body, found at diagnosis or before surgery.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Adult participants greater than 18 years old * Diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer * Completion of course of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy * Surgery completed at Cleveland Clinic Exclusion Criteria: * Participant is pregnant at the time of surgery * Pregnant participants will be excluded from participation in the study as injection of blue dye to aid in identification of sentinel lymph nodes is contraindicated in pregnancy due to the risk of fetal harm. * Metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis or diagnosed prior to surgical treatment
