What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Procedures mentioned: MRI scans

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "This study utilizes mobile health methods, including smartphone technology, subjective self-reports measures of emotion, behavioral tasks, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), physiological measures of attention and arousal, and measures of health and social support to identify neural mechanisms associated with individual differences in the temporal course of emotional responses."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study looks at how the brain responds to real-life events and how emotions change over time. It uses smartphones, surveys, tasks, brain scans, and body measurements to learn how these patterns may relate to the risk of mental health problems. It is for adults ages 18 to 35 who speak English fluently and have smartphone access.

This study utilizes mobile health methods, including smartphone technology, subjective self-reports measures of emotion, behavioral tasks, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), physiological measures of attention and arousal, and measures of health and social support to identify neural mechanisms associated with individual differences in the temporal course of emotional responses. The aim of this project is to utilize real-world and personally relevant events as stimuli to better understand how the temporal course of emotional responses relate to risk for developing mental disorders.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You are 18 to 35 years old.
  • You speak English fluently.
  • You have access to a smartphone.

Who can't join

  • You are pregnant, or you are breastfeeding and gave birth no more than six months ago.
  • Your answers on the MRI metal safety screening form rule you out.
  • Your BMI (a measure based on height and weight) is above 35.
  • You have claustrophobia (fear of small, closed spaces).
  • The study team decides you cannot follow instructions or handle the study procedures.
  • You cannot safely have an MRI (a scan that uses a strong magnet to take pictures inside the body).

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Individuals who are between 18 - 35 years old. \[Reason: to be able to provide informed consent, and to minimize variation in functional and structural differences in brain\] * Individuals who are fluent English speakers. \[Reason: to understand study instructions \& questionnaires\] * Smart phone access. \[Reason: to answer the questionnaires that are administered throughout the study. Exclusion Criteria: * Women who are pregnant or breast feeding and are no more than six months post-partum. \[Reason: may be unsafe for fetus, may affect outcome measure(s)\] * Individuals who are excluded based on attached metal resonance Screening Form (Note: this form has already been approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB for other protocols). \[Reason: necessary to participate in MRI research protocol\] * Individuals whose BMI is above 35. \[Reason: must fit into fMRI scanner\] * Individuals who have claustrophobia. \[Reason: to be able to stay in MRI scanner\] * Individuals who are unable, in the judgment of the investigator, to comply with directions and/or tolerate the procedures required for participation in this trial. \[Reason: to be able to understand instructions and ensure safety\] * Individuals who are unable to safely undergo MRI scanning. \[Reason: to be able to undergo MRI scanning\]
