What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests how safe and effective tocilizumab and atezolizumab are when used together for non-small cell lung cancer. It is for adults with advanced cancer that did not respond to earlier treatment that included immune therapy.

This is a research study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of tocilizumab in combination with atezolizumab to treat non-small cell lung cancer.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Age 18 or older.
  • Have non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer, a type of lung cancer, that is stage IV (has spread) or has returned after treatment meant to cure it.
  • Have had at least one earlier course of cancer treatment.
  • Your most recent cancer treatment included a checkpoint inhibitor, a drug that helps your immune system fight cancer.
  • Have an ECOG activity score of 0–2: you can do all or some daily tasks and are out of bed for more than half the day.

Who can't join

  • Your cancer has a gene change that can be treated with a drug aimed at that change.
  • The listing has an unclear rule about side effects from past immune therapy. Ask the study team to explain it.
  • Have another active cancer that is growing into nearby tissue and needs ongoing treatment.
  • Have cancer that has spread to the brain and is untreated or getting worse.
  • Have or have had cancer in the tissue and fluid around the brain and spinal cord.
  • Have pain from the tumor that is not controlled.
  • Have a history of autoimmune disease, in which the immune system attacks healthy parts of the body, or IPF, a disease that scars the lungs.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Advanced non-squamous NSCLC (Stage IV or recurrent after initial curative intent therapy) in adults age 18 or older * Prior exposure to at least 1 line of therapy * Exposure to a including checkpoint inhibitor in line of therapy immediately prior to enrollment on trial * ECOG PS 0-2 Exclusion Criteria: * Presence of a driver mutation that is susceptible to targeted therapy * No greater than CTCAE v5 grade 3 toxicity attributed to prior immunotherapy * Other active invasive malignancy requiring ongoing therapy * Evidence of progressing or untreated brain metastases * Evidence or history of leptomeningeal disease * Uncontrolled tumor related pain * History of an autoimmune disease or IPF
