What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study follows adults with sickle cell trait over time to learn about their blood and possible health problems. It looks at whether different amounts of hemoglobin S, a protein in red blood cells, are linked to differences in health. It is for adults who know or think they have sickle cell trait.
The main purpose of this study is to create a longitudinal cohort of those with Sickle Cell Trait (SCT) to better understand the hematologic phenotype for those that carry HbS, assess for differences in those with varying quantities of HbS and assess for potential clinical complications of SCT.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Are age 18 or older.
- Choose to take part and sign a consent form.
- Know or think you have sickle cell trait and agree to testing to find out for sure.
Who can't join
- Are not willing to sign a consent form.
- Have known end-stage kidney disease, meaning the kidneys no longer work well enough, or get dialysis to filter your blood.
- Have known sickle cell disease, including sickle cell–beta thalassemia, a type of sickle cell disease.
- Do not have sickle cell trait.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: 1. Are willing to voluntarily participate and sign the study consent 2. Know/suspect they have SCT and are willing to get tested to confirm/learn about their SCT status 3. Adults ages 18 and older Exclusion Criteria: 1. Unwilling to sign consent 2. Known end-stage renal disease or dialysis 3. Known SCD (including sickle cell-beta thalassemia) 4.
