What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This small study tests whether brief, guided mindfulness practice is easy to use and helpful for people with major depression. It is for people already getting accelerated intermittent theta-burst stimulation (aiTBS), a type of magnetic brain treatment, at MUSC. Participants use the Waking Up app to practice mindfulness between treatment sessions.
This NIH-funded single-arm pilot tests the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of embedding brief guided mindfulness practice (via the Waking Up smartphone app) into the inter-session intervals of clinically administered accelerated intermittent theta-burst stimulation (aiTBS) for major depressive disorder (MDD). Participants receive aiTBS as standard clinical care at MUSC; the research intervention is daily guided mindfulness practice during the aiTBS course. Outcomes include feasibility/acceptability, changes in state mindfulness and hedonic tone (Day 0 to Day 5), perceived ease of meditation, trait mindfulness at 4 and 12 weeks, and durability of antidepressant response (PHQ-9) at 4 and 12 weeks.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Have a diagnosis of major depression and qualify for aiTBS at MUSC.
- Already be enrolled in an aiTBS treatment course at MUSC.
- Be able to use English.
- Have a smartphone or be willing to use a device provided by the study.
Who can't join
- Have a condition that makes magnetic brain treatment unsafe, such as a history of seizures, certain implants, or pregnancy.
- Be getting another nerve or brain stimulation treatment, such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) or vagus nerve stimulation (VNS).
- Have a psychotic disorder, which can affect what seems real, or bipolar disorder.
- Have a current substance use disorder or a high risk of suicide.
- Be unable or unwilling to practice mindfulness or fill out questionnaires.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
