What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study tests how obesity and insulin resistance affect nerve and blood vessel responses when insulin acts on the brain. Insulin resistance means the body does not respond well to insulin. The study is for adults ages 18 to 65 who have obesity and insulin resistance, or who are healthy and at a normal weight.
Determine the impact of obesity with insulin resistance on the neurovascular response to brain insulin stimulation.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- You must be 18 to 65 years old and fit one of the two groups below.
- Obesity group: BMI of 30–45. BMI is a measure of weight compared with height.
- Obesity group: waist size at least 102 cm for men or 88 cm for women.
- Obesity group: HOMA-IR score of at least 2.5. This score measures insulin resistance.
- Healthy normal-weight group: BMI of 18–25.
- Healthy normal-weight group: waist size under 94 cm for men or under 80 cm for women.
- Healthy normal-weight group: HOMA-IR score under 2.
Who can't join
- Pregnant, breastfeeding, or unable to give consent to join.
- Diabetes or polycystic ovarian syndrome, a hormone condition.
- A history of heart failure, reduced blood flow to the heart, narrowed arteries in the limbs, or stroke; or a nerve or brain disease.
- Uncontrolled blood pressure: top number over 180 or bottom number over 100.
- Active cancer, except basal cell skin cancer or stage 1 squamous cell skin cancer.
- Current smoking, tobacco or nicotine use; weight-loss medicine use; or a weight change of more than 10% in the past 6 months.
- More than 150 minutes a week of moderate-to-hard exercise, or a study or medical procedure with significant radiation exposure in the past 12 months.
- Fear of tight or closed spaces, or metal implants that are not safe for MRI scans.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
