What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study tests whether electro-acupuncture, which uses needles with electrical stimulation, can help lower high blood pressure. It is for people with high blood pressure and mild disease in the blood vessels that supply the heart.
Based on previous published research in animals and human, the investigators hypothesize that electroacupuncture (EA) will have a positive effect on hypertension.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Have mild heart blood vessel disease, with no major changes on an ECG (heart electrical test) showing low blood flow to the heart at rest.
- Have high blood pressure, whether or not you take medicine for it.
Who can't join
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Have severe heart blood vessel disease with ongoing chest pain.
- Have left bundle branch block, a problem with the heart’s electrical signals shown on an ECG.
- Have an uneven heartbeat linked to low blood pressure (90 mmHg).
- Have disease in blood vessels outside the heart.
- Have a bone or joint disease.
- Have diabetes or a mental health condition that could make exercise or mental stress testing unsafe.
- Have a known sensitivity to products put on the skin, or strong reactions to medical bandages or skin tape.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Patients with mild coronary disease, and no significant ECG change reflecting ischemia at rest. * Patients with high blood pressure with or without antihypertensive medication. Exclusion Criteria: * Pregnant or nursing women * Individuals with severe coronary disease (continuous angina) * Conduction abnormalities on ECG consistent with left bundle branch block * Cardiac arrhythmias associated with low blood pressure (90 mmHg) * Peripheral vascular disease * Orthopedic disease * Diabetic or psychological illness that could interfere with safe performance of exercise of psychophysiological stress testing * Those with known sensitivity to topical preparations or strong reactions to medical dressings and skin tapes
