What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study compares two ways to use mobile health tools to manage high blood pressure after giving birth. It is for adults who recently gave birth, had high blood pressure linked to pregnancy, and started blood pressure medicine. The study looks at blood pressure, how well the heart works, and how involved and in control people feel about their health.

A multicenter randomized trial that will compare the effectiveness of two postpartum blood pressure (BP) management strategies in improving blood pressure and cardiac function and increasing patient engagement and feeling of control over one's health

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You are age 18 or older.
  • You gave birth within the past 14 days.
  • You were diagnosed with high blood pressure linked to pregnancy or preeclampsia during pregnancy or within 14 days after birth. Preeclampsia is high blood pressure with other health problems.
  • You started blood pressure medicine before leaving the hospital or within 14 days after birth.
  • You speak English or Spanish and can read and understand the consent form and instructions.
  • You have a phone that can send and receive text messages.

Who can't join

  • You had long-term high blood pressure before delivery, even if you also developed preeclampsia.
  • You already had heart or blood vessel disease, such as a heart attack, stroke, heart failure with weak pumping, a fast rhythm in the heart's lower chambers, cardiac arrest (when the heart stops), a pacemaker, severe heart valve disease, or past heart surgery.
  • You have stage 3 or higher long-term kidney disease.
  • You take 3 or more blood pressure medicines when you join.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Age ≥18 years * Delivery within 14 days * Diagnosis of preeclampsia or gestational hypertension with or without severe features during pregnancy or within 14 days postpartum * Initiation of blood pressure medication prior to hospital discharge and up to 14 days postpartum * English or Spanish speaking (able to read/understand consent and instructions) * Has phone texting capabilities Exclusion Criteria: * Diagnosis of chronic hypertension prior to delivery (would therefore include super imposed preeclampsia) * Pre-existing cardiovascular disease (including prior myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, ventricular tachycardia, prior cardiac arrest, pacemaker, severe valvular heart disease, or prior cardiac surgery) * Chronic kidney disease (stage 3 or higher) * Using ≥3 BP medications at time of enrollment
