What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests the safety of CABA-201 and how well it works for active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), also called lupus. It is for people ages 12 to 65 with lupus that affects the kidneys or moderate to severe lupus that does not affect the kidneys.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Be 12 to 65 years old.
  • Have a lupus diagnosis based on the study’s required medical guidelines.
  • Have a positive ANA or anti-dsDNA blood test at screening. These tests look for antibodies linked to lupus.
  • For people with lupus nephritis (kidney inflammation from lupus): have active class III or IV disease, with or without class V, confirmed by a kidney tissue sample.
  • For people whose lupus does not affect the kidneys: have active, moderate to severe lupus.

Who can't join

  • Cannot safely have leukapheresis, a procedure that collects white blood cells from the blood.
  • Have had a life-threatening allergic reaction or severe whole-body reaction to fludarabine, cyclophosphamide, or substances made when the body breaks down these drugs.
  • Have an active infection that needs medical treatment at screening.
  • Have severe, worsening, or uncontrolled disease affecting the kidneys, liver, blood, digestive system, lungs, mental health, heart, nerves, or brain. This includes severe, uncontrolled infections.
  • Have another condition that the study doctor believes makes joining too risky or could affect study procedures or results.
  • For people with lupus nephritis: have kidney disease other than active kidney inflammation from lupus.
  • Have had CAR T-cell therapy, a treatment that changes immune cells.
  • Have had a heart, liver, kidney, lung, or blood-forming stem cell transplant.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Age ≥18 and ≤65 (Adults) or Age ≥12 to \<18 years (Adolescents) * A clinical diagnosis of SLE, based on the 2019 European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR)/American College of Rheumatology (ACR) classification criteria for SLE. * Positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) titer or anti-dsDNA antibody at screening. * For LN subjects only, active, biopsy-proven LN class III or IV, with or without the presence of class V, according to 2018 Revised International Society of Nephrology/Renal Pathology Society (ISN/RPS) criteria * For non-renal SLE subjects only: Active, moderate to severe SLE Exclusion Criteria: * Contraindication to leukapheresis * History of anaphylactic or severe systemic reaction to fludarabine, cyclophosphamide or any of their metabolites * Active infection requiring medical intervention at screening * Current symptoms of severe, progressive, or uncontrolled renal, hepatic, hematological, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, psychiatric, cardiac, neurological, or cerebral disease, including severe and uncontrolled infections, such as sepsis and opportunistic infections. * Concomitant medical conditions that, in the opinion of the investigator, might place the subject at unacceptable risk for participation in this study, interfere with the assessment of the effects or safety of the investigational product or with the study procedures * For LN subjects only: The presence of kidney disease other than active lupus nephritis * Previous CAR T cell therapy * Prior solid organ (heart, liver, kidney, lung) transplant or hematopoietic cell transplant.
